Sometimes I get asked this very question by concerned children of aging parents and it’s a very good question to ask.

Cell phones are great mobile devices to use in emergency situations such as when you are driving down the highway and are in a traffic accident but when it comes to home safety they fall short.

There are several reasons why medical alert systems are a better choice around the home.

1. When an elderly person falls at home they do not always have their cell phone on their person. If the phone is not within reach, it becomes useless for a fall victim if they are immobilized. This is why medical alert systems come with transmitters that can be worn around the neck or as a wristband.

2. Cell phone batteries constantly need recharging. What happens if the battery is dead when you go to call 911? Your medical alert pendant will last for many months before having to replace the battery and if the battery gets low an automatic call is sent to the monitoring station to alert them of the low battery condition.

3. Cell phones can be confusing to operate especially if it’s one with very small buttons. Many seniors have reduced dexterity in their fingers due to arthritis and other medical conditions and dialing small buttons in an emergency situations can be overwhelming. With MedFirst Alert’s medical alert system you are able to have an unlimited emergency call list. Our care specialist will call your physician, caregiver, children or whoever you want us to call. Your safety is what’s most important!

So, for safety in and around the house, there’s nothing quite as effective as a medical alert system from MedFirst Alert. If you or someone you know may need a medical alert system, give us a call today at 1-800-595-0718.

John, the content of your posted article has a point. Medical alert systems are truly a need for the elderly. But still, a cell phone that is designed for the elderly is still irreplaceable. Both of these devices functions for the same purpose, which is to ensure the safety of the elderly. However, it is undeniable that these two devices function in different ways.

Let me point this out, in case of power outage, medical alert systems are usually useless as they work with electricity (not unless if the device is backed up with a battery). With this, it is always safer to provide the elderly with a reliable cell phone for seniors like Just5 phone. Specifically, Just5 has a longer battery life so there is no need for frequent recharging. When its emergency S.O.S. button was pressed, it doesn’t only dials the pre-programmed numbers and sends an automated message to them, the phone also work as an alarm to catch the attention of the people around as well.

Simply, what I want to point out here is the fact that both of the emergency response devices work in different ways so the functionality of a handset should not be overlooked. To ensure safety, it is best for an aged person to have these two devices. Anyway, Just5 is only being offered for $119.9 without a contract so it is not tough to invest on this one. Best of all, the reliability of this phone is highly assured.

    Rebecca,

Your points are well taken. In a power outage it is very important for a medical alert system to have a battery backup. All of our medical alert units at MedFirst Alert have a minimum of 32 hours backup time. So, the elderly or disabled user would have plenty of time in the event of an emergency during a power outage.

I do see a use for your mobile phone and I do like the fact that it has large buttons. This would be the perfect mobile system when a senior or elderly person is on the go traveling outside of their home. In the home the simple to use medical alert system with a pendant worn around the neck or wristband is more accessible in the event of an emergency. An entire medical history for the user is kept in our databases so time is not wasted by the paramedics trying to figure out what is wrong or what types of medical conditions the patient may have. Family members, physician, paramedics, or close neighbors can be summoned in an instant and the senior only has to press the transmitter to talk with our live care specialists.
